Concept testing

Validate product concepts before you build.

Put two product ideas, feature bundles, offers or mockups in front of a target audience before committing engineering or inventory.

Create your survey for free, then choose a paid results plan before you publish and collect responses.

Why it helps

Make the decision smaller.

Find the stronger direction while the cost of changing direction is still low.

When to use it

Match the method to the decision.

Test concepts while features, positioning, and delivery models are still inexpensive to change. Give both concepts comparable detail and recruit people who plausibly experience the problem. A vague idea will otherwise lose simply because it is harder to imagine.

Example

Ask a question you can act on.

A founder can compare a self-service workflow with a managed-service offer using the same target customer, outcome, and approximate price. Ask which concept they would be more likely to try and capture the reason behind that choice.

Interpretation

Know what the winner means.

Concept preference is an early demand signal, not proof that respondents will purchase. Pair it with customer interviews, willingness-to-pay research, prototype use, and eventually behavioral evidence before making a large build decision.
